Yup. I lay awake at night and ponder the scapula. True story. I eat my gummy, wind down with a bed time story podcast and let myself drift off trying not to put too much pressure on myself to fall asleep quickly. Cause my 45 year old body and brain kinda suck at sleeping. My mind often wanders in these liminal moments. Sometimes to the scapula. This past week it did just that many times. I was replaying (in my mind) a workshop I recently took from a brilliant colleague (who I am sitting down with on this platform in the near future for a video chat) pondering some of the concepts she focused on in the workshop and having a pretend conversation with her on points we might disagree on. Namely that dyskinesis and impingement are things we need to worry about. She leans more towards yes, we should correct those even in pain free people, and I lean more towards not really that important in pain free populations. We agree that if someone has pain and we notice a lack of movement in that shoulder blade or that the humerus has trouble externally or internally rotating that we might have success in helping that person find a different movement strategy, one that relieves the pain. But this is what I was thinking hard about that kept me from drifting off to the story of the Odyssey:
