Thinking in Springs is a research-informed publication translating anatomy, biomechanics, and exercise science into practical decision-making for Pilates instruction.

This Substack is written completely by me. My thoughts, my words, my take. I feel very strongly that our Pilates education system is failing us and leaving us without the requisite tools to truly understand human movement. Our Pilates education is stuck in 1990. Thinking in Springs is trying to bridge the gap and bring Pilates education into the 21st century giving instructors the support and confidence to work with any person that walks through your door.

  • How external forces and joint moments shape movement outcomes

  • How tissues adapt to load over time

  • How skill acquisition, attention, and cueing influence motor behavior

  • Why strength, mobility, and control are not separate qualities, but context-dependent expressions of the same systems

The goal is not to make Pilates more complicated, but to make instruction more legible. Human movement is complex, adaptable, and context-dependent. Effective and confident instruction requires understanding foundational biomechanics and exercise science concepts, not chasing perfect form.
